The
hat
|
Let's start with its definition,
what's a hat? As per the dictionary, it's a garment to cover the head and
consists in crown and brim.
The hats are used to protect from sun or from cold. They are not merely
frivolous ornamental or ridiculous objects. The hat seems to be a
superfluos article, but many times it's essential. Across the centuries,
the fashion of the hats has changed and evolved in style and in its
manufacturing. As per the woman is concerned, the fashion has evolved
passing for the high hats of the Middle Age, the small and flat straw hats
of the XII century, the bow and flowers decorated haimets used in the
family fields in the XVIII and XIX centuries. At the end of the XIX
century women weared wide brim hats, decorated with flowers, ribbons and
even birds. In the begining of the XX century the fashion of women hats
was adjusted hats with small brim or even without brims (cloches).
Actually, who has not heard of broad-brimmed hats?
These hats for women, made of straw or felt, are usually decorated with
expensive weaves and with flowers, pearls, leather, butterflies and
feathers, always articial. Like anecdote, we can say that, from 1880 to
1890, hats decorated with feathers were so popular in USA and Europe, that
a law was enacted to protect some kind of birds.
In the XIX century women bought simple straw or felt hats, and themselves
decorated it according to the moment fashion.
As for gentlemen hats fashion, there has been hoods and caps (Middle Age),
chimney hats (XVIII), top hats and bowlers in the XIX, and straw hats at
the beginning of XX century. The period from 1920 to 1930 was the golden
age of the hat since nobody went to the street without one. Until the 50's
every man in the world covered his head.
Straw and felt have been the most used materials in the manufacturing of
hats. At the beginning only peasants wore straw hats. But already in the
XVII century straw began to be used in summer hats for high society people.
They were made with italian straw, very expensive and elegant. Later,
imitation straw began to be done with paper, cardboard, grass and horses
mane. Felt was used during centuries in gentlemen hats, but was not used
for women until early XIX century.
Nowadays, everything wich covers head is in fashion. No matters if it's a
headdress for a special event, a felt hat, a beret, a cap, a panama hat, a
balaclava with earflaps, mountain cap,... The paradox is that, this
popular art is again in fashion thanks to big haute couture companies like
Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Channel, Gaultier...
The beautiful thing of hats is that they frame the face and draw the
features with great mastery. Certain cold blood is needed to wear any kind
of headdress, out of the traditional events. That's because, due to lack
of habit, should be accepted that when we wear something over our head we
attract attention. To wear a hat is the highest as image control is
concerned and to grasp in its essence the worth of oneself transformation
that fashion has.
When veiling the face and drawing angles, the hat transforms the features
of the face and flatters people with wide face and also with good defined
bones. |
